 Attracting and Acquiring Talent

A company’s greatest asset is its talent. Attracting and retaining a quality workforce with the necessary skills provides a company with a great competitive advantage. After reading chapters in the textbook, consider the challenge of attracting and retaining talented personnel. Consider the need for companies to be open to diverse staffing. As you prepare for this Discussion, focus on the strategies for restructuring HR in order to manage a diverse workforce.

With these thoughts in mind:

• Select a topic from this week’s readings that interests you the most.
• Consider a real-world situation that relates to or could be addressed utilizing primary concepts from the assigned readings.

Post your response by Day 3. Your post should be approximately 200–250 words in length. Include the following:

• Explain why there is a strategic need for companies to use a variety of selection and recruiting methods.
• Select the most relevant factors related to selecting employees who fit into an organization and explain why they are the most relevant.
• Describe a real-world situation in which an organization incorporates the use of effective selection methods that positively affect its health and explain why they were effective.

Use the Week 2 Discussion Template (located in this week’s Learning Resources) to develop a draft of your statement. Then, post your finalized statement to the Discussion Thread.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 6 to two or more of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

• Suggest another selection method that would apply to your colleague’s real-world situation.
• Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.

    In this chapter, you will explore the implementation and importance of technology in human resource management. You will also be introduced to strategic approaches for employing these tools.

    Focus on the functions of HR information systems. Review and think about the examples and anecdotes provided in the chapter that illustrate the major ideas being conveyed. Consider how human resource objectives affect the purchase and use of technology for a company.

  • Chapter 6, “Selecting Employees Who Fit” (pp. 202–249)

    In this chapter, you will explore strategic use of virtual organizations, contingent workers, and outsourcing.

    Focus on the strategic variables of recruitment and selection methods. Review and think about the examples and anecdotes provided in the chapter that illustrate the major ideas being conveyed.
