Required Essay #1:
Content Handout #4a: Essential Concepts explains, “Meaning comes through decisions, judgment, and intent, not random chance.” Later in that same handout I note, “When we participate, we consider our reaction.” Our textbook authors, Martin and Jacobus, add, “we want to go beyond the fact about a work of art and get to the values revealed in the work” (4). Explain how any of these quotes s us understand the key concept of Participation, i.e., what it would mean to participate with a work in the humanities. Next, apply your explanation to any work of art in chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 or 14 to demonstrate your participation with that work. If it s, of course you can look online for a better view of the work you select. Your explanation should include correct usage of the words “subject” and “content,” as well as some reference to specific elements of form related to the work you are going to explain your participation with. Your essay should be at least two paragraphs in length, have at least 200 words or more, and be written in standard English as is expected in college level writing.
Grading Rubric: 16 points total broken down as follows: 6 points for correctly explaining how one of the quotes s us understand the concept of participation. Plus 10 points for correct usage of the words “subject,” “content,” and the naming of at least two specific elements of “form” in your selected work of art as they relate to your participation with the work you have selected.

Explain how each of your two selections fits the definition of classicism or romanticism by linking terms of the definition of each term with specific elements of form (or content) within each work of art. Your answer should come in at about 100-200 words or thereabouts.
Grading Rubric: 16 points broken down as follows: 6 points based on 1/2 point each for each component of the definitions; 6 points based on 2 points for correct selection of examples; and 4 points for your explanation why each selection fits the designated category.
